Running the Race

by Colleen Barry
Written 01-19-06

We all run the same race by the same rules

But this race isn’t fair.

You showed up with sneakers,

And I showed up bare.

Please explain again how this makes life square.

You’ve been trained and bred for greatness and gold

While I struggled to cope with all that was sold

Just to get by and cross the line.

So when the gun pops and we take off

Both running at tops speeds,

Try not to mock me as my bare feet split and bleed.
