Quidam's View

The Strongman's Ballad

by Colleen Barry
Written 03-17-06

These times are breaking under me,

Like soft soil ‘low my feet,

Like ocean waves in retreat.

It breaks away and I am left here standing in the rain.

These walls, they crumble to the earth.

They bow down to the weight of gravity against them;

They fall with all the world holding out against them.

These days are ticking away

And dropping grains of sand through the narrowest

Strip of space.

And in the place of what once was there,

Is now the heartache and despair of

Empty clouds of air.

Nothing here to support this weight any longer.

My shoulders tire and my knees give way;

Holding the world on my back must end…

Please end this some day soon.
