The Haunting Song

by Colleen Barry
Written 09-27-06

Hauntingly the notes burst forth,

Reverberating strings tingle under cold finger tips.

A hushed voice floats in a flurry overhead dropping

Sage words that drift down to ears like flakes of snow.

The chills set in and cringe under layered skin;

Rippling the surface and paling melanin.

Raising hair and breathing life to fear.

The unearthly highs and lows of sound cripple the body

But set the mind free-wandering

Into the deepest hollows of forest

Where branch and limb

Scratch face and skin

And ghostly, airy thrills sink in.
